The Purpose of concept art
The purpose of concept art in the games design industry, is that it's there to help bring ideas up of characters, buildings, environments and other objects in the game, many ideas are created so if the first or second idea fails, they have many to fall back on. Some of the ideas are then developed further and reworked until the 3D Graphic Designer, Lead Artist and most importantly client are happy with the final drawings, and then they can go forward with the rest of the game development.
This is an extremely important part of development, if not the most, and is always needed because if the character or environments are not fit for purpose it can result in a delay in the game’s development, resulting in a loss of money which isn't good for anyone within the company or the clients who are waiting for the game.

Sketchbook work
This here is some work I've done in my sketchbook, it includes an "About me" page, a hands, eyes and ears page, 3 anatomy pictures, 3 environment pictures and 3 still life pages.
Splash Damage art test
For our Splash Damage Art Test, we had to create a creative mind map full of ideas for characters, environments and themes so we could equip ourselves with many options to choose from when coming to the design process, rather than just having one idea and sticking to it, with the worry it possibly might not work and you'll have nothing to fall back on.
So this is my mind map I created, and I've managed to narrow my ideas down to like a "twisted" environment with a "dark" theme and my character the focus is going to be on is a woman. Or instead I was could do an "industrial city back alley" kind of thing, with a "dark" feel to it but also have a girl/woman as the character. My second idea isn't on my mind map, but my mind map inspired me later on to think of it.

My mood boards
This here is a condensed version of my Pinterest moodboard, it explains what I like about them, and how they've inspired my own ideas, and what I'm probably going to use in my own design from them.
This here, is a link the a moodboard I created on Pinterest for more inspiration from my original mind map

Silhouettes for character and environment
Here are some of the silhouettes I created of the "toilet" for my environment, I created 20 so I had a big enough range to choose from and wouldn't get completely stuck for ideas later down the line. I like the the building that has signs on the most, I also like the "warped" one (second from left on the top line) but as I said in my moodboard, creating a scene that is warped, is hard to do whilst trying to keep it looking professional, so I am most likely going to use a building with big neon signs on it.

These are some of the silhouettes I created of my potential characters, I again created 20 so I had enough ideas to choose from. I like the silhouette of the woman lying down and the tall thin character the most out of all of them here but, I think my character in my final design is definitely going to be a girl/woman rather than an alien/monster so it is between the one lying down and a woman standing up with her back faced to the viewer, I don't have a silhouette of a woman like this, because it was later on when I decided to include this in my idea. You will be able to see a really rough sketch in the thumbnail images I've drawn.

Thumbnail sketches of scenes
These are the thumbnail sketch ideas I created. These are all inspired from my mind map, mood board and silhouettes.
These are all the different ideas I've pondered on, as I previously said, I'm going to have a woman/girl as my character, so out of all my sketches I have, I like the first one, and the middle one on the bottom row. Looking at both the images, I think both could turn out quite well but, I think the one at the bottom will be more successful because you can clearly see the "toilet" well, and it fits in nicely with the scene and doesn't look too out of place, I also think this angle of perspective is more interesting than the first one, and it will also be easier to draw so it's a win win situation. I just think overall I could make the second one look more professional and look nicer in general, so I'm going to stick with this idea for my actual scene. |
Final sketch of concept art
This is my final concept before I put it into Photoshop, where I'm going to add a lot more detail and things like rain, which I couldn't draw properly in pencil, and obviously colour and textures to try and make it look 3D and professional.
